It’s Time To Get Personal

Don’t be afraid to get personal in your email marketing. I’ve mentioned throughout this email marketing masterclass that your readers have to get to know, like, and trust you before they are comfortable spending money on your products or those you recommend to they buy. One way to make that happen is to let them get a glimpse at who you are.

Does this mean you have to share every aspect of your personal life and what you do each day? Of course not. How much of your personal life you share is completely up to you and the last think you want to do is distract them with too much “life stuff”. Instead, share a little here and there where it makes sense.

Storytelling is a great marketing technique. We come from a long storytelling tradition. It’s how we learn and how we pass knowledge on to the next generation. Storytelling is much older than the written word, and it’s still just as powerful as it was thousands of years ago. Share your content and even your offers in the forms of stories and sprinkle in little anecdotes from your personal life.

For example, you may mention that you read a great business book over the weekend while you were snowed in. Or something your kids did this summer perfectly illustrates how a new tool can help with your business. In other words, come up with ways to incorporate little glimpses of what’s going on in your personal life, into your email marketing content.

While you shouldn’t be afraid to get personal, you do want to be careful that what you share serves your message and your overall marketing strategy. Don’t share just for the sake of sharing it. Make sure it makes sense and enhances your communications with your readers in some way, shape or form.

Getting personal not only allows your readers to connect with you on a deeper level, it also makes it more likely for them to reach out and get back in touch with you. When you share something personal they can relate to, they will often hit reply and share their own experiences. Don’t ignore those emails. Instead, use them as a way to get to know your readers better. Email back and take advantage of the communication with one of your readers. You never know what you’ll learn, and that one person may just be someone you want to work with long-term. Or it may be the person that can open doors for you, you didn’t even know existed. Or you may end up making a huge difference in his or her life at a difficult time. You just never know, so be personable, make those connections and see where the road takes you.
